A TOTAL of 145 teachers and non-teaching staff of Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien College attended a Mental Health Awareness talk on Monday.
The talk was delivered by the Mental Health Strategy Unit of the Health Promotion Centre, Ministry of Health, as part of the Professional Development Programme for the teachers and staff of the school.
It was aimed to raise awareness and instil better understanding on mental health and mental illness including stress, depression and anxiety as well as to promote good mental health practices among the staff.
Medical Officer at the Health Promotion Centre Dr Norzawani binti Ishak provided an overview of mental health and mental illness along with outlining symptoms of the most common mental disorders and their effects.
She mentioned that prevention begins with being aware of and understanding the early warning signs and symptoms of mental illness. She also stressed on the importance of seeking professional help should an individual require.
Clinical Psychologist at the Health Promotion Centre Nor Syahmun binti Haji Metassan also delivered a talk and emphasised on the importance of maintaining a work-life balance, reaching out to loved ones and colleagues who appear to be going through a difficult time, and to not stigmatise those with mental health issues.
