THE Private Secondary Schools’ English Language Oratory Competition is a biennial competition with the objectives of exposing, promoting and instilling the art of public speaking to improve the command of English Language, said Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) Secondary School Principal and the competition’s oratory chairperson Chong Li Chen at the finals for the event yesterday.

“The event secondly is meant to provide a platform for private secondary school teachers and students to have closer collaboration to share ideas and views,” she continued. “The third objective is to build the students’ confidence and develop their public speaking skills.”

Chong revealed that this year’s oratory competition has drawn a very encouraging response, with 12 private schools and 24 students participating in the event.

A workshop to prepare the participants for the finals was held on June 13. Facilitating the workshop was Allen Ang, with participants being briefed on speech structure, speech writing and delivery tips.

Chong highlighted the significance of the theme for the competition this year.

“The theme ‘Generation Z: A Call for Responsible Action’ is a very exciting and relevant theme for today’s youth,” she said.

“Generation Z is a term coined referring to post-millennials born in 1995 or later. This generation grew up with technology. To them, digital devices such as computers and smartphones are no longer luxuries but necessities. They live in a world of continuous updates due to the variety of apps available and treat social media as a way of life.”
