THE 2nd Braille, Orientation and Mobility Workshop was officially launched by Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil at Pusat Bahagia yesterday.
The workshop is jointly organised by the Community Rehabilitation Unit and Persons with Different Abilities Unit of the Community Development Department (JAPEM), Special Education Unit of the Ministry of Education, and Special Religious Education Unit of the Islamic Studies Department, and the Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind (BDNAB).
The workshop aims to provide exposure to the public on the needs of persons with different abilities, especially the blind. Participants will also learn about the importance of Braille and its function as the eyes for the blind to read and write.
In her remarks, Acting Director of the Community Development Department Rostinah binti Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Sura Pahlawan Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Tahir highlighted, “In ensuring the wellbeing of life especially for the blind, the government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has allocated allowances for the blind as well as special assistance, for example, assistance in special tools like white cane.
“In addition, for the blind who are still in school, they are given donations from strategic partners of the Community Development Department and also Braille machines,” she added.
A total of 22 participants are taking part in the 2nd Braille, Orientation and Mobility Workshop.
