THE importance of focussing on developing the country’s economy, human capital as well as youth was highlighted yesterday by the Speaker of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib while delivering closing remarks at the 15th LegCo session yesterday.

Touching on the budget allocated by the government for the Financial Year 2019/2020, the Speaker of the LegCo said, “We must focus on more efficient spending on matters that will enhance the nation’s economy and productivity, preserving the welfare and well-being of the citizens and residents in this country.”

He said the theme of the budget for the Financial Year 2019/2020, ‘Investing in our Future’, is relevant and timely with the desire to realise Vision 2035.

“We should not only focus on efforts to develop the economy but also on the development of human resources, as this will be a cornerstone of the progress of a country,” he highlighted.

Insya Allah, with the commitment and effort of all stakeholders, the present and future generations will be able to enjoy the outcome of all the efforts and initiatives we are working on at this time.”

The Speaker of LegCo said the government and relevant stakeholders should also continue to pay serious attention to younger generation as they are the country’s asset who will carry on the development agenda, and spoke on the need to provide a platform as well as upskilling and reskilling programmes to ensure they remain relevant as time progresses.

“Youth and entrepreneurs should utilise opportunities provided,” he said. “All these efforts and initiatives require the support of all parties to have an effective impact.

“Throughout our meeting this time, we have discussed various issues and listened to views, suggestions and progress on national development projects and government initiatives in diversifying the economy and enhancing the country’s productivity, and here I think it is important for us all to cooperate and apply a Whole of Nation approach so that efforts and initiatives are not in vain and will produce results that we all aspire for.

“Finally, we must stop over-dependence on the government and instead work hand-in-hand, discuss and implement efforts that can help ease the burden of the government and promote the country’s economic growth.”
