Vietnam arrests two female ‘drug mules’, seizes 1.7kg synthetic drug

HANOI (Bernama) – Two local young women, believed to be ‘drug mules’, have been detained by the police in connection with the seizure of 1.7kg of synthetic drug on Thursday.

Northern Son La province police said yesterday, the suspects, aged 20 and 28, from Son La’s Thuan Chau district had allegedly transported the laboratory-made drug in the form of over 17,400 pills.

Under interrogation, the women told police that an identified man had hired them to transport the drug, Xinhua news agency reported. On Wednesday, a 30-year-old man from northern Son La province, which borders Son La, was arrested for transporting over 2.4kg of heroin from Son La to Hanoi, according to the municipal police.

According to Vietnamese law, those convicted of smuggling over 600 grammes of heroin or more than 2.5kg of methamphetamine face the death penalty.

It is also the death penalty for those making or trading 100 grammes of heroin or 300 grammes of other illegal drugs.
