Trio fined over undeclared cigarettes, alcohol

A LOCAL man was yesterday ordered by the Magistrate’s Court to settle a BND5,000 fine for possession of smuggled cigarettes.

The defendant, Zainal Abidin bin Abdullah, 37, will have to serve five months’ jail in default of payment.

The Customs prosecutor informed Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid that a team of Customs preventive officers raided the defendant’s residence at a flat in Old Airport, Berakas at 1.20am on November 15, 2018 and found five cartons of undeclared cigarettes in his car parked outside.

The Magistrate’s Court also ordered a local woman yesterday to settle a BND5,000 fine for possession of smuggled cigarettes.

The defendant, Norashikin binti Abdullah, 38, will have to serve five months’ jail if she defaults.

The Customs prosecutor informed Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati that a team of Customs preventive officers found 22 packets of undeclared cigarettes at the defendant’s residence at a flat in Old Airport, Berakas during a raid on the premises at 1.20am on November 15, 2018. In a hearing for a separate case yesterday, a Malaysian was ordered by the Magistrate’s Court to settle a BND12,928 fine for possession of smuggled alcoholic beverages.

The defendant, 27-year-old Jedfrey Liew Vui Yun, will have to serve 12 months’ jail in default of payment.

The Customs prosecutor informed Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati that a team of Customs preventive officers arrested the defendant in his car at the parking lot of a hotel on Jalan Batu Satu at 2am on January 19, after finding 24 bottles of liquor, 12 bottles of wine, 24 bottles of beer and 24 cans of beer in the vehicle.
