Storm damages eight houses, school in Ipoh

IPOH (Bernama) – Eight houses and a school around Taman Lapangan Jaya were damaged by a storm that hit the area on Monday.

Sungai Rapat Assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said most of the damage involved the roof and awning of the houses, valued at more than RM10,000, while the zinc roof of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Rapat Jaya was detached.

“These damages that can be repaired, we will repair it, while those that needed more attention, we will find groups that can help with the repair costs,” he told reporters after visiting damaged houses in Taman Lapangan Jaya yesterday.

Mohammad Nizar, who is also the state Investment, Industry and Regional Development Committee Chairman, said his office has been working to ensure the affected residents receive the natural disaster aid.

Meanwhile, a resident Maznah Maniamin said in the incident that occurred at 4.30pm, the heavy rain and strong winds had detached the awning of her house and blew it 50 metres away.

“During the incident, I was not home but my two children were. They said the strong winds had blown over the roof, causing the heavy rain to enter the house and damaging the furniture,” she said.
