Malaysian govt provides RM8.7 million early school aid in Melaka

MELAKA (Bernama) – Early School Aid 2019 totalling RM8.7 million will be given to 87,187 eligible primary and secondary students in Melaka, said Chairman of the State Education, Human Resource, Science and Innovation Committee Nor Effandi Ahmad.

He said a special government allocation through the Education Ministry will be distributed in stages to students in 313 schools in Melaka from early this week and next week.

“Early school aid of RM100 will be given to Year One to Form Five students from families with household incomes of less than RM3,000. “The aid would help lighten the expenses borne by their parents or guardians at the beginning of the year to buy school items and pay fees,” he told reporters yesterday.

Earlier, he presented the 2019 Early School Aid to 520 students at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Padang Temu.

Commenting on the issue of high prices of school canteen food which had gone viral on the social media recently, Nor Effandi who is also state assemblyman for Telok Mas said the issue did not arise in the state and as of the fourth school week, there has been no complaints on the matter.

He also welcomed the Melaka Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to monitor school canteens to ensure that prices of goods sold there were fair and reasonable.

“The price (of food) have been fixed as per the agreement between the canteen (operators) and the school when they obtained the tender, so we see the complaints as being subjective, if there are any complaints on the social media, they are not formal,” he said.
