Indonesian man feared drowned in Sukau

SANDAKAN (Bernama) – An Indonesian citizen is feared to have drowned in Sukau, Kinabatangan, about 130km from Sandakan, after he failed to return home at Ladang Leepa 1 since January 15.

According to a statement by the Sandakan Civil Defence Force (APM) yesterday, the report on the victim Samsong Bunga, 38, was only lodged at the Sukau police station last Saturday.

The victim was said to be on his way to Ladang Permodalan 1 to fetch his uncle who was unwell at 9am on January 15 and failed to return home since.

Meanwhile in Pekan, the body of a teenager believed to be drowned after being swept away by strong currents while trying to help his friend who fell into the river at Kampong Tanjung Medang Hilir was found yesterday.

Pekan Fire and Rescue Station Chief Assistant Fire Superintendent Wan Samsul Effendi Wan Mahmud said the body of the victim, Mohammad Fariz Mohd Syukur, 16, were found by the public at 11.50am.

“The victim was believed to be fishing at the river with his family and he was trying to help his friend who slipped and fell into the river, though the friend came out reportedly safe,” he told reporters yesterday.
