CHUNG Hua Middle School (CHMS), Kuala Belait, sent 14 students, under the guidance of two teachers, to participate in the Curtin Malaysia Carnival 2018 challenges on August 25, 2018. The host of this carnival was Curtin University of Technology and was held in the university itself in Miri, Sarawak.
Eight of our students participated in the Eco-Business Design Challenge and were given a task to create a product to meet the criteria of this year’s theme which was ‘Innovation’. They were given reusable materials and were to complete the project in an hour and a half. At the end of the competition, all of the teams were required to present their products to an audience. With much perseverance, our CHMS participants, who had named their team ‘Kukumba’, won first place, securing RM500.
The second competition joined by our students was the Spelling Bee Competition. This competition was held to promote students’ knowledge of proper word usage and strive for excellence in spelling skills. Various secondary schools from Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei took part in this competition. Our school sent two teams with each team comprising of three students. They went through to the finals and clinched the champion and first runner up positions respectively, bagging the cash prize of RM300 for first place and RM200 for second place.
