FIFTY-FOUR people participated in a Mandarin orange-eating contest, while 94 children participated in a fruit-colouring contest yesterday, at the launching ceremony for the 2019 Taichung City Premium Ponkan Agricultural Product Fair at the Warisan Utamajaya Emporium and Supermarket.
The launch, held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration, was attended by representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Brunei Darussalam William Lin, First Emporium Group Chairman Lim Kok Phay, Managing Director of First Emporium and Supermarket (branch) Lim Kian Seng, the Chairman of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce BSB Malcolm Lim, President of the Taiwan Business Association of Brunei Darussalam Richard Chuang Hsi Shan, and representative of the Feng Yuan District Farmers Association of Taichung City Chang Chiao Chun.
The event began with a 24-drum performance by the students of Chung Hwa Middle School BSB.
“Thanks to agricultural technological advancements, Taiwan has managed to produce premium quality fruit in all four seasons for the international market,” said General Manager Lim Toh Yung. “First Emporium and Supermarket has imported Taiwan fruits for over 10 years, and we received immense response from the public. This year, we also imported the premium-quality Ponkan mandarin orange to share with the Brunei market.”
“Ponkan is one of the most popular fruits from Taiwan. We hope that, through this event, Ponkan and other fruits from Taiwan will become Brunei’s most important seasonal fruits,” said Lin.
Nur Anisah binti Haji Dollah won the 2019 fruit-colouring contest for Group A (six-nine years) followed by Issac Tiong Ing Hoe and Rainnes Goh Yi Huai.
Kerry Tiong Pei Yun, Nur Um’mi Aziqah binti Haji Abdul Zamri, Quinvee Su Chuan Xi, Jessie Voon and Titto Chai Jun Ting received consolation prizes.
Nur Ummi Hasana binti Haji Abdul Zamri won the Group B (10 – 13 years) category followed by Nur Mahirah binti Haji Dollah and Wong Zhang Jia.
Emily Lim Cai Ying, Tang Ann Yii, Chia Xuan Lei, Elysia Lim Pei Ying and Nivia Lim Xin Ning received consolation prizes.
