THE Street Football Championship is a sports activity intended to inject motivation to the players at a young age and foster cooperation, discipline and bond among them.
This was stated by Head Imam of Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque in Kampong Mentiri Imam Haji Shamsul bin Haji Abdul Latif during the opening of the first Street Football Championship organised by the mosque’s youth committee yesterday.
He said the tournament provides opportunities for players to showcase their talent and potential as well as a platform to build their self-confidence.
He added, “The tournament also aims to inculcate in youth discipline and encourage them to participate in healthy activities.”
A total of 12 teams are competing in the tournament divided into four groups (three teams per group). The top two teams in each group will qualify for the quarterfinals, with the final stage taking place tomorrow.
Teams in Group A comprises Madang ‘A’, APFC ‘A’ and Syukur Selalu while Group B consists of the Predator, HZ FC and APFC ‘B’ teams.
Teams in Group C comprises Ash-Shaffin, Madang ‘B’ and BONATA, while Group D consists of the Zamrud, SAR and Brunei Warrior teams.
Imam Haji Shamsul expressed confidence that the tournament would help bridge ties among the players and organisers as well as gather youth in useful activities to fill the first term school holiday for the year.
Before competing for the championship, the players attended a talk titled ‘Sports Guideline in Islam’ by Assistant Director of the Publication Centre at the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) Ustaz Haji Mohammad Shahrol Azmi bin Haji Abdul Mulok.
