1,000 runners join 75km charity run

Around 1,000 runners took part in the Varsity Run 2021, which was organised in conjunction with the 75th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) and Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien, Bandar Seri Begawan yesterday.

UNISSA Rector Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal flagged off the first batch of runners in the 18.75km Elite Run.

The Fun Run/Walk was flagged by UBD Vice-Chancellor Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz and UTB Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman.

Meanwhile, the warm-up session was led by the KUPU SB Ra’es Dr Haji Adanan bin  Haji Basar.

The Varsity Run 2021 is a charity run aimed at raising funds for Palestinians while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

All proceeds from the registration fees and donations will be channelled to the Palestinian Humanitarian Fund.

This year’s Varsity Run covered a total distance of 75km in accordance with His Majesty’s celebrated age.

To complete the distance, UBD, UTB, UNISSA and KUPU SB split the distance equally between their representatives.

Varsity Run was made up of two categories: the 2.5km Fun Run/Walk and 18.75km Elite Run.

Participants for both categories included senior officials, lecturers, staff and students of the universities, as well as the public.
