YAYASAN Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) School began its Speak More English Campaign (SMEC) 2014 – 2015 yesterday at the school’s Kindergarten Hall.
The guest of honour at the event was Managing Director of YSHHB, Hj Brahim Hj Ismail.
Present during the campaign’s launch were YAM Pg Anak ‘Abdul Raqiib bin Pg Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pg Anak Hj Abdul Rahim, YAM Pg Anak Raqeeqah Raayatul Bolqiah binti Pg Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pg Anak Hj Abdul Rahim, YAM Pg Anak Abdul Hafeez bin Pg Anak Khairul Khalil, and Pg Anak ‘Abdul Muta’ali Haziq Hamidullah bin Pg Anak Haji ‘Abdul ‘Ali Yil-Kabier.
The SMEC aims to develop the habit of speaking English among peers and staff at school at all times in order to improve students’ confidence and comfortability in communicating with the English language.
Co-curricular activities will be implemented that will provide opportunities for students to practise their oratory skills outside the classroom setting.
Parents also have a role to play in supporting SMEC where they can ‘participate’ by using English as a means to communicate with their children while on school grounds. Children should be encouraged to read books and watch movies in English, and discuss potential opportunities to volunteer at school with their children’s teachers.
During the launch of the campaign, students put on stage performances such as ‘I am the Music Man’ by Kindergarten children, a choral speaking of ‘Goldilocks and The Three Bears’ by Year Three students, and a drama entitled ‘The Leader in Me’ by secondary students.
