HOMAGE was paid to Brunei’s history as the capital played host to the Youth Traditional Boat Race 2014 yesterday.
Organised by the Brunei-Muara Youth and Sports Department, the event was held on the Brunei River, with the prize presentation taking place at Port View, Fratini’s Restaurant, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex.
The guest of honour was Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz bin Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar, Chief of Adat Istiadat Negara.
A number of races took place during the event, with cash prizes ranging from $120 to $400 in the various categories.
Each of the traditional races finished in front of Fratini’s Restaurant, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex, with the eight, 10 and 15 rower races beginning at Kg Pengiran Tajuddin Hitam, while the 20 and 25 rower races began at Kg Tamoi Ujong and the 30 rower race began at Jong Batu.
The Kg Sungai Bunga Youth team managed to successfully win the 30 youth rower traditional race, winning a trophy and medals for their efforts, followed by Majlis Lumba Perahu Kg Lurong Dalam in second and Waktu Brunei Darussalam in third. Waktu Brunei Darussalam were able to win five other races, namely the eight, 20 and 25 invited rower traditional boat races along with the 10 and 20 youth rower traditional boat races.
Meanwhile, Lela Menchanai Brunei (Mukim Saba) won the 15 and 25 youth rower traditional boat races.
In addition to the traditional boat races were two jet ski races, which took place in front of Fratini’s Restaurant, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex. The first one, the Jet Ski Run-About Normally Aspirated (1600CC) race, was won by Hj Idzam Norhaidi bin Hj Mashud, followed by Christopher Keasberry in second and Abd Aziz Hanafi Ismail in third.
The 20-lap Jet Ski Run-About Open was also won by Hj Idzam Norhaidi bin Hj Mashud, this time with Ishak bin Hj Kabon in second and Christopher Keasberry in third.
