FIDE Master Yee Soon Wei emerged champion of the 31st National Day Rapid Chess Tournament while FIDE Master Md Aliuddin Hj Azahari was the champion of the 31st National Day Blitz Tournament at the Brunei Chess Centre yesterday.
Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Datin Paduka Hajah Adina binti Othman presented the prizes to the winners.
Brunei Darussalam have jumped 20 places in the FIDE rankings by country from 139 to 119 as of 2015, according to the President of the Brunei Chess Federation, Haji Zainal Abidin in his remarks during the prize presentation yesterday.
Haji Zainal shared his discussion with the national coach that there has been an increasing quality in the country’s chess as proven in the rise of the FIDE rankings. The president added that the number of FIDE rated players in Brunei has increased from 42 to 55 in 2015.
Also, Brunei Darussalam has seen an increase of up to 20 places in tournament seeding after the Olympiad from 148 to 128 following 11 days of competition.
Haji Zainal also revealed that there will be a new lady to hold the FIDE Master (FM) grade in the near future.
“Moving forward, there are still challenges and one which is financial support and we will try to get people and companies as well as the help of the Department of Youth and Sports (JBS). The other challenge is to get more talent from local schools and find more to inject our national team,” Haji Zainal added.
Adenan Metussin was the best placed for the Veterans Above 50 Years and missed just outside the top 10 places placing 11th overall in the Blitz tournament.
Pg Abd Rahman topped the Veterans Above 60 Years group while Siti Nur Fatanah was classified as the best lady finisher.
Kamarun Ariffin and Md Syahmi were best placed for the under 14 and under 16 categories, respectively.
