FIVE students accompanied by two supervising teachers have departed to Sochi, Russia to attend the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2014 which will be held at the Sochi Olympic Park from November 21 to 23.
The theme for this year’s Olympiad is ‘Robot and Space’, and Brunei will take part in two of its open categories.
Representatives from the Sultanate were selec-ted through a national level competition; they were the champions of the Brunei Robotics Olym-piad (BRO) 2014 for Open Category which was held by the Science, Technology and Environ-ment Partnership (STEP) Centre earlier this year.
Team Sierra-Sierra Tango, comprising Naimatul Basirah binti Hj Aliuddin and Nur Amni Amanina binti Hj Narudin from Sungai Tali Primary School, and supervised by Awg Ronny bin Puasa, will compete in the Open Category – Elementary with their project called ‘Agrospace’.
Team SMSUA Technobot, comprising Nor Mu-thiah binti Esa, Izzah Haziqah binti Hj Chuchu and Umml Nur Su’aidah binti Sufrani from Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School, and supervised by Awg Radzuan bin Hj Chuchu, will be competing in the Open Category – Senior High with their project ‘Robotlifter’.
The contingent is led by Dyg Satinah binti Hj Abang, the Education Officer of STEP Centre, accompanied by Dyg Ameliana binti A Embran from Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School as a judge. Sarimah binti Abu Bakar, the Acting Head of STEP Centre, was also present at the Brunei International Airport’s Departure Hall to bid them farewell.
The Ministry of Education (MoE) through the STEP Centre had been coordinating students’ participation in WRO in Singapore (2004), Bang-kok, Thailand (2005), Nanning, China (2006), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2012) and Jakarta, Indo-nesia (2013).
The Organising Committee, comprising go-vernment authorities, the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, as well as public and business agencies, is headed by Dmitry Livanov, the Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, and Nikolai Nikiforov, the Minister of Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation.
Meanwhile, the Executive Directorate is led by Antonina Tsitsulina, head of the working party in creating the Coordination Council under the jurisdiction of the President of Russian Federa-tion in Agency for Strategic Initiatives, the President of Association of Children’s Goods In-dustry Enterprises.
