Berlin (dpa) – Reigning Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has cut short testing in Barcelona due to illness, his team Mercedes said Thursday.
“@LewisHamilton is unwell and not able to continue driving today,” Mercedes said after around two hours of the first day of the second pre-season test.
The 30-year-old Briton reportedly has fever and it is unknown what further part he will play in the tests in Spain.
Hamilton was scheduled to drive for the team Thursday and Saturday at the Circuit de Catalunya track with team-mate Nico Rosberg taking over Friday and Sunday.
However, with Rosberg suffering from an inflamed nerve in his neck according to the German magazine Auto, Motor and Sport, he was unable to stand in.
Mercedes said back-up driver Pascal Wehrlein, who was originally supposed to drive for Force India in Spain, would be recalled to deputise.
The Formula One season begins with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 15.
