OFFENBACH, Germany (dpa) – Workers should make sure to take rest breaks, even when they have a lot to do, a German expert is warning.
“If you don’t take time out, you’ll definitely slow down,” advises Sabine Horn, an occupational health management consultant in the city of Offenbach.
She says it is more effective to invest a little time in rest periods and then resume work refreshed.
Young workers in particular often underestimate the value of short breaks and risk over-exerting themselves, she cautions.
To relax best, workers should step away from their work area as physically leaving one’s work behind makes it easier to occupy the mind with matters unrelated to work, pointed out Horn, who offers a course on better management of worker time.
Sufficient time should be taken for lunch, during which other activities – such as checking e-mails on a smartphone – should be avoided.
Horn said workers who regularly skipped rest breaks, thinking they lacked the time for them, should consider whether they were demanding too much of themselves.
