THREE people working at a food distribution company, Syarikat Perniagaan Malar Setia, were sentenced to jail yesterday after they pleaded guilty to charges of criminal breach of trust and disposing of stolen property in the form of frozen food that belonged to their employer, which netted them slightly over $5,000.
Intermediate Court judge, Pg Hjh Hanani Pg Hj Metussain, handed down jail sentences of four months to 42-year-old driver Hj Danan bin Hj Othman; seven months’ jail to 33-year-old storekeeper Jamel bin Hj Ruslan and two months’ jail to 34-year-old driver Mohd Sharizan bin Dahari.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ratno Zaidi stated that the trio were caught after a logistics staff member found a shortage in food items in their store, leading him to suspect employees were stealing goods.
On October 13, he launched an audit inspection of the company’s store. On October 20, the audit and inquiries resulted in the findings that employees were indeed stealing from the company and had been sold off to other buyers at a cheaper rate. This led to a police report being filed followed by the arrest of the defendants.
The defendants managed to siphon off $5,088.29 worth of food between July and September.
