AN elderly woman, alerted by the sound of crumpling wood, has escaped unscathed just seconds before the stilts to her wooden Kg Layong home gave way, sending the entire house crashing down.
Aminah binti Sumpong explained that she had been tuned-in to her favourite television programme moments before her home began to cave in over the weekend.
The 61-year-old retired government official, who lived alone, said the weather at the time was poor and that strong winds would sometimes shake the entire structure of her home. This was not unusual, she said of the old house that had been built by her father.
When her father passed away in the early 80s, she moved into the typical Malay stilt house built on an approximately one acre piece of land.
Aminah, who had worked in the government sector at the Agriculture Department and has long retired, is now dependent on her old age pension allowance.
With her home destroyed, she is temporarily seeking shelter in her sister’s house next door.
In view of the incident, the Tutong District Office yesterday handed over assistance to the elderly woman.
Tutong District Officer Wardi bin Hj Mohammad Ali handed over the contribution to Aminah in the presence of Penghulu Mukim Lamunin, Village Head of Kg Layong and personnel from the Tutong District Office.
The collapsed house was later torn down with the help of the Fire & Rescue Services Operasi ‘E’ Tutong, Tutong District volunteers, Tutong District Office personnel and members of the village consultative council.
