INDONESIAN President Joko Widodo and his spouse Hajah Iriani along with their delegation visited Kampong Ayer and took a cruise along the Brunei River yesterday afternoon.
Upon arrival at the Dermaga Diraja jetty in Bandar Seri Begawan, President Joko Widodo and his delegation were welcomed by the Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, and his Deputy, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof and spouse.
Before boarding a cruise ship, the Indonesian President spent some time mingling with a number of Indonesian nationals who were in the area to meet and greet their president.
Accompanying the president during the visit yesterday were Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong and spouse, and Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar.
The Indonesian delegation first visited the Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery, where they were given a briefing on the history and background of Kampong Ayer (water village) as well as the economic and social development of the residents.
During the tour, the president and his delegation observed some of Brunei’s traditional games such as tinting. Before departing the gallery, the Indonesian president signed on a parchment.
Later, the president and his spouse visited the residence of Haji Ahmad bin Haji Bujang, village head of Kampong Lurong Sikuna. His house is among the 64 houses included under the Kampong Ayer Upgrading Pilot Project which covers an open area of six villages in Mukim Saba as well as several areas in Mukim Sungai Kebun.
Upon their arrival at the Kampong Ayer Housing Complex, the Indonesian delegation was welcomed by Pengarah Haji Ismit bin Pengarah Mukim Haji Naim, Penghulu of Mukim Peramu and spouse. While enjoying some local delicacies, President Joko Widodo and his delegation listened to a briefing delivered by the Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer on the background of kampong Ayer, while a representative from the Public Works Department (PWD) elaborated on the Kampong Ayer Upgrading Project, which is fully financed by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
The president, his wife and their delegation then went on a cruise along the Brunei River, taking a closer look at the facilities and amenities available in Kampong Ayer.
Also present during the visit were the Permanent Secretary and Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer as well as the Acting Chairman of the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Board.
