AUTHORITIES yesterday dismissed a rumour that had gone viral on the popular messaging platform WhatsApp that two major department stores in the country were selling imported poultry that was not halal.
The message claimed that SKH department store and Hua Ho department store were selling dubious poultry, and further claimed that the products were being imported from Sarawak by irresponsible parties without proper halal certification.
The message also claimed that action had been taken by authorities.
In response to queries from the public, the Halal Food Control Division of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) on its Facebook page yesterday stressed that the message being spread is baseless and untrue and advised the public to stop spreading circulating information that originates from unverified sources.
It added that poultry being sold in department stores are supplied by local slaughter houses, which are under close scrutiny and certified by MUIB, and added that all reports pertaining to inspections and investigations carried out by them are confidential and would not be disseminated among the public.
