THE Wellness Weekend was launched yesterday at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR) building. The event aims to help participants in cherishing their mind, body and spirit through health and happiness talks.
The expert speakers – Lindsay Gasik, a Durian enthusiast; Md Shariff Abdullah Peters, Singapore’s first Blade Runner; and Susan Laing, an iridologist and nutritionist – shared their motivational stories with the audience.
Lindsay Gasik said that she first saw durian at an American raw vegan food festival in 2009 and had no idea that it would eventually change her life.
“It was the most bizarre thing I had ever seen, like a fruit concocted in the imagination of a sci-fi writer. Through durian I have found my passion as a writer, educator and conservationist of rare tropical fruits. I hope to help people rediscover the sheer diversity of flavour and nutrition that can be found in their own backyards,” she said.
Along with her husband, Rob Culclasure, Lindsay has been to 12 Southeast Asian countries and has studied and documented different types of durians that she had discovered during her explorations.
Singapore Blade Runner Md Shariff Abdullah Peters, who runs with a flex-run prosthetic leg, spoke about how his life went from bottom to the top. He said, “You have to do what others won’t to achieve what others don’t.”
Md Shariff has taken part in almost 20 marathons, ranging from 175km to 520km, and envisions joining the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon 2015 to celebrate Singapore’s 50th Anniversary.
Susan Laing shared her expertise on iridology and said that just a look at one’s iris makes her understand the root cause of imbalances like food intolerances and deficiencies in minerals and vitamins.
Susan, who is a trained nutritionist, showed participants how to create foods that are good for gut, liver and gallbladder cleansing.
Booths from sponsors featuring food and eco-enzyme products, home products and more have also been set up.
Co-organised by Raw Food Asia and Astera Consultant, the two-day event is sponsored by Sunshine Borneo Tours, The Brunei Hotel, NHF, Astera Consultant, MSK Sdn Bhd, Brunei Detox Bar, Forever Green Organic, Superwater Marketing, Fruitime, Chambray Blue, Bath & Beauty by Charlene, The Borneo Pantry, Project SAFE, RFA Youth and RFA Fruit Enzyme.
The event is supported by the MIPR and sanctioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA).
