THE flooding in Limbang, Sarawak, worsened yesterday following continuous rainfall over the past few days with the worst hit areas, located along the Ulu Limbang riverbank in Ng Medamit, severely affecting Iban longhouses.
According to flood victims, the number of people evacuated to a relief centre has risen to 442 members of 99 families, compared to 224 people last Sunday. Victims have also been relocated to places of safety such as schools, community halls and churches.
Of those affected include people working in both Brunei’s private and government sectors, who have applied for emergency leave to visit their longhouses.
The Sarawak State Security Council’s (MKN) Assistant Secretary, Salihin Annuar, said all rescue operations – evacuation, aid distribution and impromptu registration with the Social Welfare Depatment – ran smoothly with no loss of life reported. The numbers of victims are expected to rise.
The water levels at some of the affected longhouses at Kg Meruyu, Kg Entakong and Kg Menalam are shoulder-deep and have completely damaged the residences and personal effects of residents.
