PUTRAJAYA (Bernama) – A total of 3,521 Ministry of Education volunteers have been deployed to Kelantan to help clean up 160 schools to prepare for the opening of the new school session on Jan 11, 2015.
Principal Assistant Director of School Management Division, Ministry of Education Ab Rahim Othman said the cleaning involved 31 schools in Pasir Mas, Tumpat , Tanah Merah, Gua Musang, Kuala Krai, Machang and Kota Baharu.
He said the group consisting of teachers, staff of the Ministry of Educationand students was the first phase of relief convoy and the next batch would be sent in stages to the flood affected states.
“Throughout the mission the teachers and ministry staff involved are on official duty and we encourage them to participate and help,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters at the sending off ceremony of the relief convoy officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who is also Education Minister yesterday.
Ab Rahim said about 50,000 volunteers under the ministry were ready to be mobilised throughout the country in the post-flood relief mission.
“In the initial stages we will only go to schools that can be easily cleaned by volunteers and which do not involve much difficulties.
“For schools which are critically bad, we will get heavy machinery such as bulldozers to clear the silt and debris before sending volunteers to clean up,” he said.
