THE Department of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in collaboration with Battle Pro Marketing and Management Services will be organising a Volunteer Festival in conjunction with the International Volunteer Day 2014.
This was announced by the Acting Deputy Director of Youth and Sports, Muhd Aziman bin Hj Awg Nasir at a press conference, which he chaired yesterday at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
According to the chairman, the festival is being held for the first time and serves as part of the department’s effort towards providing support and special honour to the community particularly the youth in carrying out voluntary works at national, regional and international levels which is in line with Brunei Vision 2035.
It is also to appreciate the good deeds and contributions of volunteers in the country as well as further raise public awareness on volunteers’ contribution to the community.
With the theme, ‘Volunteers, Make Changes’, the three-day festival will take place from December 12 to 14, at the Indoor Stadium in Berakas.
There will be a Volunteers Recruitment Drive that will see the involvement of government agencies – directly and indirectly associated with the development – and voluntary activities including NGOs, volunteer organisations, civil society organisations, corporate bodies and others.
It will also feature a Volunteer Showcase where participating agencies will be given the opportunity to share programmes and showcase their voluntary works.
Also taking place will be a Youth Entrepreneurship Expo, which will see the youth engaging in small entrepreneurship activities as an approach towards encouraging youth to be involved in entrepreneurial activity.
The Volunteer Festival will be officially launched on December 12 by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Awg Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah.
A forum on the theme of the celebration will be carried out during the launching which is to be chaired by Awg Hj Abd Rahman bin Hj Ahim and three panel members comprising Hj Ali Yusri bin Abd Ghafor, Nurizzatul Izzah binti Hj Abd Rahman and Hj Abd Rashid bin Hj Awg Damit.
The acting deputy director hoped that the festival will help raise the understanding on the importance of volunteering as the backbone of building an efficient nation.
International Volunteer Day, which is celebrated every December 5 as set by the United Nations since 1985, is not merely a celebration but can be set as a platform to encourage community’s involvement in intensifying voluntary works through the distribution and sharing of activities as well as planning of local volunteer bodies.
