WE CAN only imagine the shock and pain victims of a disaster such as a flood or a collapsed house feel, but it is fortunate that in Brunei Darussalam, the government agencies provide quick assistance to those in need.
Last Sunday, a large part of a house in Kg Sinaut collapsed.
The family which lived there received a visit the same day from several agencies including the Community Development Department, Royal Brunei Police Force, Operation ‘E’ of the Fire and Rescue Department and the Village Head of Kg Sinaut, and yesterday received help from the Tutong District Office, Department of Youth and Sports and Fire and Rescue Department.
The assistance included efforts to make the house safer by taking away unstable parts of the house and cleaning up debris.
The family also received basic daily necessities and cash.
Present to join the work and to hand over the contributions was Awang Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali, Tutong District Officer along with representatives from various government agencies.
The donation was received by the head of the family, 90-year-old Haji Awang Sulaiman bin Mahmud.
Also present to join the work were the Village Head of Kg Sinaut and Senior Officers from the Tutong District Office.
Haji Awang Sulaiman lives with eight family members and the affected area of the house was occupied by his son.
According to Haji Awang Sulaiman’s daughter, Rosinah binti Haji Sulaiman, it was fortunate that there was no one in the collapsed section as her brother was away at that time.
She said at first the electricity went out, and then suddenly they heard a loud noise as that part of the house caved in.
Rosinah extended her family’s appreciation to the help given by the various government agencies.
She said the assistance, including the donation and cleaning work, also helped them both physically and psychologically, as it shows that there are people out there who care for those in need when an unexpected disaster such as this happens.
