UNIVERSITI Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) yesterday held a press conference to announce the launching of its 2014 Charity Carnival which will be held for four days from December 4 until December 7 from 9am to 9pm.
This was stated by Dr Siti Sara binti Haji Ahmad, Dean of the Faculty of Arabic Language and Islamic Civilisation, in her capacity as the co-chairperson of the carnival, during the conference held at the lecture room of the university in Gadong.
The charity carnival is expected to be launched by Dr Haji Mohammed Hussain bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Ahmad, Deputy Rector of UNISSA.
Organised by the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language Learning (PPIB), the charity carnival is aimed at raising funds and half of the proceeds will be donated to the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Fund for Orphans (DANA) while the rest will go to the fund of PPIB.
During the charity carnival, an entrepreneurship competition will be held for UNISSA’s students where a total of 10 teams will participate.
Each team will receive B$200 as a start-up model and will be facilitated by their respective lecturers.
Proceeds from their income will be donated as an effort to raise funds during the charity carnival.
Dr Siti Sara also said that a total of 37 booth slots are also opened for other local entrepreneurs who are interested to take part in the carnival.
To date, there are only 10 slots left available.
Those who would like to take part in the carnival are required to pay B$400 per booth for the four-day carnival.
Dr Siti Sara said that various fun activities will be carried out throughout the carnival such as Tausyeh competition, colouring contest, drawing contest, story-telling competition, Jawi reading competition, creativity contest, among others.
She also said that all of these activities are open for the public to participate and participants are required to pay minimal registration fees which will also go to the fund.
She also added that there will also be a photography competition in three different categories – the “Comel Muslim/Muslimah” photography for toddlers aged from one to four, Hijab photography for teenagers (16-25 years old) and Islam Photography for adults (26 years above).
According to her, the judging of the photography contest will be made by members of the public.
To further enliven the charity carnival, a variety of performances are also scheduled to be performed such as Tausyeh, drama, sketch comedy, forum and many others throughout the whole event.
Among the objectives of the charity carnival are to show the contribution and effort carried out by PPIB and UNISSA in helping those in need and to serve as a platform for UNISSA citizens especially its students to take more responsibilities especially towards the orphans.
It also aims to foster the ‘silaturrahim’ between UNISSA citizens and members of the public.
At the same time, the charity event will help to promote programmes and courses that are offered by UNISSA and also, to inculcate values in fostering healthy competitive nature, leadership and entrepreneurial skills among the students.
