SYN Teatra Production – a theatre arts group from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), with the help of the Department of Youth and Sports and the Putra Seni group, presented a theatre performance entitled “Dewan Persidangan”, recently.
The two-day performance took place at Dewan Balai Raya, Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB).
Awang Sharifuddin Zainal, lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage, said in an interview that performing in Brunei Darussalam was part of their “Salam Kembara Citra Borneo” programme, which included a performance entitled “Nyonya” in Kuching, Sarawak with the help of the Kuching Language and Library Council.
The director of “Dewan Persidangan”, Mohamad Hazizee bin Hussain, a Year 3 theatre student at the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage contributed to the progress of the two-day performance. He said the group’s name “Syn Teatra” means “Children of Theatre” and is a new group under Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
“This is a first step for us Year 3 students to carry out our final project and we hope that this programme will serve as good experience for us to continue in the field of theatre arts in the future,” said Mohamad Hazizee.
Awang Sharifuddin hopes that the relationship established between UMS students and art enthusiasts of Brunei Darussalam will continue to flourish.
He also hopes that art enthusiasts from Borneo, including Brunei Darussalam, Sabah, Sarawak and Kalimantan will join together to form a Borneo theatre production in the future, to carry out theatre art workshops, theatre festivals etc.
He has advised local theatre arts enthusiasts, especially the youth, to continue their theatre activities as the art of theatre has many hidden skills.
“In my opinion, theatre humanises us, because it is one big social science lab where we observe the society and the world,” he said.
