UBD Varsity Silat G41 Club, one of the branches of Perguruan Seni Pencak Silat Gerak 41 (PSPSG41), yesterday held its annual ‘Ujian Kenaikan Arat’ (UKA) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) . A total of 11 ‘pesilat’ (martial artists) participated in the UKA.
Two grading tests were done – the first was the ‘pukulan 1-15’, ‘mayang’, ‘baji’, ‘kitaran’ and the close range combat technique (tempur tangan kosong). This test was conducted to assess the skill, techniques, strength and agility of each ‘pesilat’. They were also tested with basic weapons combat techniques using Tambong Dua, Tambong Panjang and Golok, before they can move on to the primary level test.
The second test, which was the primary level, was then conducted for six of the ‘pesilat.’
Each of their creativity, skills and techniques in martial arts using blunt weapons like the Tambong Pendek, the Tambong Panjang and Selindang were tested in this assessment. Each ‘pesilat’ was required to defend himself/herself with a ‘kuncian’ from the coach.
UKA was intended to evaluate and assess the understanding of the ‘pesilat’ in the martial arts movement and also as one of the activities to support and preserve the cultural heritage of the Malay silat martial arts.
The event started with the ‘arena or ring opening’ by Haji Ramli Hj Tamin followed by a briefing by the president of PSPSG41, Rusli bin Bujang.
At the end of the event, they were awarded the ‘Arat’ according to their respective levels by the PSPSG41 president followed by an ‘arena or ring closing’ performed by Md Azmi Hj Mohd Yakup as an indicator that UKA was completed.
