THE final year medical students comprised of Ak Muhammad Yazakka bin Pg Haji Mohd Yamin, Nurul Farhana binti Muhd Ariffin and Nazhrah Al-Ieman Hj Mostapha from the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (IHS), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), organised a Scavenger Hunt yesterday as part of the ‘Awareness Workshop – Stigma and Discrimination towards Special Needs People’.
The two-day workshop, which commenced on October 6, targeted 56 students of Year 4 and 5 from Sungai Kebun Primary School.
On the first day, the activities were basically an introduction on the topic to the students through several interactive activities, which included a drama, sing along, drawing contest and some talks.
Whilst yesterday, a scavenger hunt, alongside 12 students with special needs from Pusat Ehsan, were carried out where they incorporated some games using blindfolds, sock-covered hands and a three-legged race.
The workshop aimed to educate the students with regards to special needs individuals and raise awareness of stigma and discrimination against them.
It also aimed to instil empathy within the students towards people with special needs.
Besides that, pre and post intervention surveys were conducted to assess any changes in the students’ perception of people with special needs.
