A SYMPOSIUM on the Brunei Information Resource Collection will be held on December 2 and 3, 2014. Carrying the theme of “Preserving the Knowledge of Cultural Heritage for Research”, this event will be jointly organised by Brunei Studies Collection Division, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Library, and the Academy of Brunei Studies of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
According to a press release, the objective of the symposium is to enable access, sharing and preservation of information on the cultures of various ethnic groups in Brunei Darussalam, as well as to ensure that a representative record of Bruneian life is collected and preserved for the future.
The symposium is also aimed at preserving documentary heritage resources – particularly those relating to the cultures of Brunei – to provide needed information and to learn how to preserve historic documents to ensure that they can be reliably accessed.
Another objective of the event is to enhance information resources as well as research.
Several sub-themes were selected as the topics of discussion during the symposium, such as Preservation and Conservation, Digitisation and Digital Library, Martial Arts, Weaving, Life Style and Law.
The target audience of the symposium include librarians, lecturers, researchers, teachers, archivists, educators, information specialists, government officers and students.
Among the speakers are local and foreign experts in their respective fields, including Professor Dr Matthew Santamaria; Professor of Asian and Philippine Studies at Asian Centre, University of the Philippines Diliman, Associate Professor Dr Mohd Zariat bin Abdul Ranim; a lecturer from Universiti Putra Malaysia, Dr Haji Muhammad Hadi bin Muhammad Melayong; Secretary of Majlis Tertinggi Melayu Islam Beraja, as well as lecturers from Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences: Professor Dr Che Wan Ahmad Zawawi bin Ibrahim, Associate Professor Dr Haji Asbol bin Haji Mail and Dr Awang Maslin bin Haji Jukin/Jukim.
