UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) efforts in providing better facilities for the purpose of more effective research has achieved yet another milestone with the launching of the University’s first Catamaran dubbed ‘BIOFOS II’, held at Poni Divers in Serasa yesterday.
Spearheaded by Dr David Lane who teaches Aquatic Biology and Coral Reef Ecology, the boat was bought with a grant for better access to the sea for diving and research and working on coral reefs in particular.
Also present at the launching was the Dean of Faculty of Science, Profesor Dato Dr Mohamad bin Haji Abdul Majid, as well as other members of UBD’s administrative and teaching staff.
The BIOFOS II is an upgrade from the BIOFOS I, and can accommodate 12 passengers and two crew members. Built by Ken and Tan Sdn Bhd, the BIOFOS II has been customised for the ease of divers exit and re-entry, as well as for the storage of various equipment such as diving tanks and gears, and other tools used by researchers.
Poni Divers has been appointed as the boat caretaker and docking location.
