UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam (UBD), the leading educational institution in the Sultanate, has seen significant expansion both in its academic and infrastructure, offering internationally recognised rese-arch programmes and has the capability of producing influential graduates. UBD has received the attention from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS), China, to establish closer academic ties and become its strategic partner in the near future.
This was expressed by the Dean of the Institute of International Education from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Liang Xuehong, in an interview with the Bulletin during the Southeast Asia media exchange programme in Guangzhou, Guangdong, People’s Republic of China, recently.
The dean explained that the university has established cooperation and exchange programmes with a number of distinctive universities in Southeast Asian countries and is keen to work similarly with universities in Brunei to further create a conducive learning environment for students.
He hoped to initiate the negotiation process with UBD in terms of academic, faculty or student exchange programmes both in short and long term. He added that the university has various departments which offer a wide range of programmes and research opportunities that may be of interest to Bruneian researchers.
Guangdong University of Foreign Studies is also one of the few universities in China that offers a four-year degree in International Commerce conducted in the English language.
Guangdong is also the largest economic region in China and students can gain experience and knowledge about the world of business and commerce through the university’s cooperation with international companies that have a foothold in the region.
To date, GDUFS has more than two thousand international students from over 100 countries from all over the world including some 210 students from Thailand, 39 people from Indonesia, four from Malaysia and two from Singapore.
In addition, GDUFS’ uniqueness lies particularly in the Institute of International Education, a department that teaches various Southeast Asian languages including the languages of Thai, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Liang Xuehong is confident that through collaboration with UBD, a rich exchange of knowledge and experience will be cultivated that can bring mutual benefits to both parties and also strengthen the ties of friendship between the two countries.
