BRUNEI Darussalam will be joining other nations at the 5th International Holy Quran Competition. The international competition is scheduled to be held in Tehran, the Islamic Republic of Iran, from December 31, until January 6, 2015.
The delegates who will represent the Sultanate for the competition left for Tehran yesterday.
The delegates comprise five representatives, among them, Haji Awang bin Haji Aji, Deputy Principal at Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB), who is also the delegation head. Mohd Fikri bin Haji Sharbini from ITQSHHB and Haji Ismail bin Haji Sulaiman will act as coaches for both participants – Mohd Zubair bin Haji Zaini from ITQSHHB, who will be competing in the 30 Juzuks category and Shahrin bin Haji Mohd Noor, who will compete in the Tarannum category.
Speaking to the media yesterday, both participants expressed their hopes of winning the competition in their respective categories. They also conveyed their gratitude to the Ministry of Religious Affairs for choosing them to be the nation’s representatives at the competition.
Awang Shahrin, 42-year-old Year 2 student at Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan taking Higher National Diploma in Teaching (Usuluddin) shared with the Bulletin that he has been reading the Al-Quran since 20 years ago but started actively participating in national Al-Quran reading competitions since 2001.
He also said after he has been notified on his selection for the competition, he prepared himself by practising and enhancing his skills in mastering Tarannum.
This is his first time to represent the Sultanate at an international competition.
Mohd Zubair, a Year 2 student taking Diploma in ‘Aliah Qira’at at ITQSHHB, said that he will perform to the best of his abilities in the competition.
