NEW DELHI (dpa) – A bomb exploded in an east Indian courtroom Friday, killing two people and injuring 16, while two prisoners escaped during the incident, police said.
The explosion at Arrah, around 60 kilometres from Bihar state capital Patna, came amid tightened security across India ahead of the arrival of US President Barack Obama to India on Sunday.
District police chief Akhtar Hussain said one of the victims was a woman who allegedly carried the bomb in a bag to court. A policeman succumbed to his injuries at a hospital later. Police said the two prisoners escaped following the explosion. “It does not appear to be a terrorism-related incident, the woman was there to help criminals escape,” Hussain said.
The explosion occurred near a cell where prisoners are held before being produced in court.
Hussain said police were investigating whether the bomb exploded prematurely or the woman intended to carry out a suicide attack.
