TWO police constables were sentenced to jail for 16 months by the Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday for receiving bribes.
Senior Magistrate Pg Masni Pg Bahar was determined to pass a custodial sentence to deter others from committing the same offence, saying it was a serious one that may have caused a lack of public trust in the police force.
The senior magistrate found Amirul Izzat bin Haji Yahya and Mat Zidi bin Haji Jumat guilty of receiving a $40 bribe from a local at about 1.30pm on July 22, 2009 on the Hassanal Bolkiah Highway as inducement not to take action on an alleged traffic offence.
DPP Hajah Anifa Hj Abd Ghani’s evidence was found to have proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.
The policemen had asked the driver to pull over because he did not fasten his seat belt.
The policemen’s duty was only to serve a summons for a court date, and not to issue a compound for offences.
The policemen, however, had threatened to issue a compound.
It was learnt that the policemen had asked for the bribe.
Counsel was Ahmad Zakaria.
