THE soft launch for the Regatta Perayaan 68 Bazaar was held yesterday, marking the start of the long-awaited regatta race scheduled to be held today in conjunction with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 68th birthday celebrations.
In his welcoming speech, Acting Assistant District Officer cum event chairman Haji Haizul Rizal bin Haji Yahya noted that the event hopes not only to attract the community to Tutong, but also to strengthen family institutions and community spirit.
Later, Tutong District Officer cum guest of honour Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali awarded cash prizes and certificates to the winners of a recent photography competition, which had seen the participation of 23 shutterbugs.
After the prize presentation, the guest of honour was accompanied by acting assistant district officer and senior officials to launch the Regatta Perayaan 68 Bazaar. This was then followed by a tour of the photo exhibition.
The Regatta Perayaan 68 will feature many side events for families and visitors to indulge in, such as the Regatta Parade (this afternoon) which includes the ‘Kereta Berhias’ (decorated vehicles) parade, a photo competition and exhibition, art competition, exhibition by government agencies, Lego display, Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation matches, stage performances, fun family games, cultural showcases and face-painting for the young ones.
Musical and cultural stage performances, ranging from youth bands to cultural troupes and traditional acts, will also keep the crowd entertained throughout the day.
Meanwhile, government agencies and the private sector are using the event as a platform to raise public awareness on numerous fronts. Also, free medical checkups will be made available to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Today’s regatta race will be split into a morning and afternoon session, with breaks for Zohor and Asar prayers. A prayer area has also been set up.
The day will see 27 teams competing in the paddling race, 13 participants taking on the 605cc Jet Ski Race and 20 participants in the F2 Speed Boat Race.
