THE 2014 Borneo City Cup championship was launched yesterday by the Director of Youth and Sports Department Haji Abdul Malik bin Haji Mohammad, at the Batu Bersurat basketball court.
Haji Abdul Malik in his speech acknowledged the rising popularity of basketball in the country especially among youth. “Basketball is indeed becoming a very popular sport in Brunei. It has also developed at competitive and recreational levels.”
He hoped that hosting the championship would further promote the sport of basketball in Brunei Darussalam.
The Director of Youth and Sports Department also said, “I strongly believe that through this competition players will learn from each other and would become active in grooming talents. I urge all the participating teams to play in the true spirit of sports and at the same time foster friendship through sports.”
Chai Tze Yun, the chairman of the championship, said, “The Borneo City Cup, which is usually held every August, has had a delayed start due to quite a number of celebrations and tournaments in the country which took place during the same period.
“Therefore, I would like to apologise for the delay which might have caused inconvenience to participating teams,” he added.
In the tournament, teams from Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Labuan and Brunei Darussalam are vying for the challenge trophies – Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr George Chan Challenge Trophy for the men’s team, Datuk Yee Moh Cai Challenge Trophy for veteran’s team and Dato Lim Beng Thai Challenge Trophy for women’s team.
Also present at the launching ceremony were Lim Ting Guan, the Chairman of the Brunei Basketball Association and members of the association as well as officials from the Youth and Sports Department.
