THE Toastmaster Club yesterday organised a public speaking workshop at the Sultan Bolkiah Vocational School (SVSB) in Seria, looking to enhance the public-speaking skills of the entire teaching staff.
At the Mechanical Engineering Lecture Theatre of the school, Oil Town TalkERS (OTTERS) President Allen Ang listed the highlights of the workshop and gave a talk on ‘Giving Effective Evaluations.’ This was followed by a trial evaluation of a test speaker, putting into practice what had been learnt.
Participants were highly interactive throughout the programme, injecting their thoughts, questions and feedback to help expand their knowledge and sharpen skill in evaluating the students.
During the ‘Giving Effective Evaluations’ segment, Allen Ang explained the different benefits of performing evaluations and how to get immediate feedback to allow for brainstorming and solution-finding to resolve issues.
Meanwhile, Alice Ang, Toastmaster of the Day, briefly explained the activities held at the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre in Seria. One of them involves exposing participants of different backgrounds and professions to supportive and positive learning experience, where they empower themselves by developing communication and leadership skills. This subsequently results in greater self-confidence and personal growth, which Toastmasters aim to provide.
In his closing speech, SVSB Principal cum guest of honour Akandi bin Haji Abdul Razak gave feedback on the workshop before going on to laud the Toastmaster Club for its efforts and contributions to the school.
