THE 3rd Joint Judicial Conference between Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Singapore was held on November 14 and 15.
Hosted by the Judiciary of Brunei Darussalam at The Empire Hotel and Country Club, the conference was attended by 60 judges and judicial officers from the three countries.
The Joint Judicial Conference is held annually to strengthen the relationship and forge closer ties between the three respective judiciaries.
It was for the first time the conference was held in Brunei Darussalam.
The opening ceremony was officiated by the Chief Justice of the Brunei Supreme Court, Dato Seri Paduka Hj Kifrawi bin Dato Paduka Hj Kifli.
In his opening address, the Chief Justice warmly welcomed his counterparts, Sundaresh Menon, Chief Justice of Singapore and Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Md Raus bin Sharif, President of the Court of Appeal of Malaysia, and their respective delegations.
Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Hj Kifrawi said the judicial conference provides the judges and judicial officers from the three countries an opportunity to share their experiences and discuss and exchange views on judicial matters and practices.
Each judiciary presented papers at the conference.
Sundaresh Menon spoke on the topic of ‘Codes of Judicial Conduct – Can They and Should They be Enforceable’?
Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Md Raus bin Sharif spoke on ‘Access to Justice’.
Also in attendance at the opening ceremony were John Barry Mortimer, President of the Court of Appeal of Brunei Darussalam, Dato Paduka Steven Chong, High Court Judge of the Brunei Supreme Court, Dato Paduka Hj Hairol Arni bin Hj Abdul Majid, High Court Judge of the Brunei Supreme Court and Pg Hjh Rostaina binti Pg Hj Duraman, Judicial Commissioner/Chief Registrar of Brunei Darussalam.
The Chief Justice of the Brunei Supreme Court, Dato Seri Paduka Hj Kifrawi also hosted a closing dinner for the delegates at the Empire Hotel and Country Club.
