NAIROBI (dpa) – Fidel Castro Odinga, the son of former Kenyan prime minister and current opposition leader Raila Odinga, was found dead at home early Sunday, his family said.
Odinga and his wife Ida announced the death of his son at age 41 shortly after police opened an investigation into his death, which occurred under unclear circumstances.
“It is with profound sorrow that my wife Ida and I announce the untimely passing of our eldest son Fidel Castro Odinga,” the former Prime Minister said in a tweet.
He was found dead Sunday morning at his home in Nairobi’s upscale neighbourhood of Karen.
Fidel, a politician and business executive who mostly concentrated on running the family businesses, was the grandson of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first vice president who died in 1994 after leading the opposition against founding president Jomo Kenyatta.
President Uhuru Kenyatta said the death had robbed Kenya of a youthful man with a bright future.
A group of about 30 youths marched to Fidel’s home waving twigs – a mourning custom in the East African country – and demanding to know who had killed him, The Daily Nation newspaper reported online.
Riot police were deployed along Ngong Road that leads to Karen to control the crowds that included people from Nairobi’s Kibera neighbourhood.
The government’s chief pathologist, Jensen Oduor, and the director of the criminal investigations department, Ndegwa Muhoro, visited Odinga’s home to open the investigation.
Police pathologists planned to conduct a postmortem on the body on Monday.
