A LOCAL man received a month’s jail sentence after he pleaded guilty in the Bandar Magistrate’s Court to an attempt of theft from a policeman’s home.
The 38-year-old Khairul Kasmi bin Haji Kassim confirmed with Senior Magistrate, Haji Nabil Daraina PD Ustaz Hj Badaruddin, that he did not know he had targetted a policeman’s house.
The senior magistrate concluded that the passing of a custodial sentence was required, even when the penalty also suggests a fine, to achieve a deterrent effect on such cases which have increasingly become more rampant in the country and involves a serious disrespect of other people’s property.
Khairul Kasmi is a maintenance personnel employed at a hotel in Jerudong and complained in court that he only gets paid on the 15th of each month and that he was desperate to buy cigarettes and fuel for his car.
The court told him that committing a crime such as theft is unacceptable and that he should be thankful that he has a job in the first place to help support himself and his family.
Deputy Public Prosecutor, Danial Kifrawi, informed the court that the defendant parked his car near a house at Kg RPN Lambak Kanan at about 12am on December 11.
The defendant alighted his car and walked towards the house upon noticing two air-conditioners placed on the veranda outside.
Seeing that nobody was around, the defendant carried one of the air-conditioners and placed it near his car.
As the defendant was carrying the second air-conditioner, the policeman who owned the house looked outside his window and shouted “Thief! thief!” on seeing the defendant’s act.
The startled defendant dropped the air-conditioner and ran towards his car but was apprehended by the policeman and a neighbour who assisted in bringing the defendant to the Lambak Kanan Police Post.
The air-conditioners that are worth $1,000 were recovered and ordered by the court to be returned to the owner.
