Bangkok (dpa) – Thai authorities are expanding their investigation into an alleged corruption ring led by a disgraced former commander, reports said Monday.
Additional charges of bribery will be added to the case as authorities investigate General Pongpat Chayapan and his associates’ possible involvement in online football gambling, The Bangkok Post reported.
Pongpat, a former head of the Central Investigation Bureau, was arrested along with several senior officers in late November on charges of corruption, extortion and lese-majeste.
On Sunday, warrants were issued for the arrest of five more senior officers which they say are linked to Pongpat’s network.
Over one billion Thai baht (about US$30 million) in cash and other valuables were found in Pongpat’s home during a police search after his arrest.
Over 260 Thai police officers serving in the same unit as the former commander were reassigned.
