A THAI national was fined $8,000 or serve eight months jail in default after he pleaded guilty to possession of smuggled contraband in the form of cigarettes, liquor and beer.
Chaiwat Phoemphun, 45, was driving his Mitsubishi Spacewagon on the evening of November 16, 2013, when he was stopped on his way home where customs preventive officers were conducting a raid at the JPH staff house in Kg Rimba.
Customs officers found 12 cans of beer, two bottles of liquor and a carton of cigarettes in the defendant’s car.
At his quarters, customs officers found 17 bottles of liquor, seven cartons of cigarettes and 156 cans of beer, all of which he failed to declare as legal imports.
The defendant admitted to having bought all the items from Limbang, which were available for sale.
Deputy Public Prosecutor, Danial Kifrawi, applied for the goods to be forfeited to the state for disposal and the defendant’s car seized as well as it was used in the committing of the offence.
Senior Magistrate Pg Masni Pg Bahar, allowed the application and ordered it to be carried out.
