A THAI man was fined $1,400 or serve three months’ jail after pleading guilty in the Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday to possession of smuggled cigarettes and liquor.
Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana Haji Abdul Rahman released Sirichai Wichaiwong on a bail of $1,400 or one local surety, allowing the defendant two months to pay the fine.
Sirichai and a companion were selling food from a vehicle to workers at a Military Academy project site along the Muara-Tutong Highway just before lunchtime on December 4, 2014.
Customs Preventive agents were inspecting the area when they witnessed the incident and immediately went to check the activities.
Sirichai and his companion were asked if they were also selling cigarettes and liquor at the worksite, to which they answered no.
However, a further inspection on the vehicle revealed two bottles of liquors and 39 packets of cigarettes – all undeclared.
The Magistrate ordered the undeclared goods be forfeited and dealt with by the Customs Controller.
