BANGKOK (dpa) – Ten couples in Thailand began an attempt Friday to break the world record for a dance marathon in time for Valentine’s Day.
Nine Thai couples and one Canadian pair started dancing at 6am (2300 GMT Thursday) in Pattaya, 150 kilometres south-east of Bangkok, and will need to be still going at 5.01 pm on Valentine’s Day to set a new record.
“The time to beat is 35 hours and one minute,” said Somporn Naksuetrong, the manager of Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum which is hosting the event.
Under the rules of the contest, the couples have to continuously move their legs, until a change of songs when they are given a 30-second respite.
They are also allowed a five-minute break every hour to conduct “personal affairs.”
The winner of the competition will receive $9,400 in cash price and a certificate from the Guiness Book of World Records.
