Bangkok (dpa) – Thai authorities have stopped a Buddhist monk trying to meditate to death, local media reported Thursday.
The 65-year-old abbot at a monastery in Chaiyaphum province was trying to achieve death through meditation but authorities moved in to rescue him late Wednesday, a day after he started the bid.
He had said he was not committing suicide but that it was just his time to die. Suicide is illegal in Thailand.
Authorities had to negotiate with his many disciples and reporters to gain access to the monk, who had climbed into a coffin with air holes and closed the lid, Thairath Newspaper reported.
The abbot had originally told his followers he would be dead by Thursday, and to stand clear of the coffin which would self immolate.
Authorities said the project was “inappropriate”, and that they had convinced the elderly abbot to be moved to a hospital for treatment.
