THE Smell The Street Skate Shop of Kuala Belait recently hosted a visit for a group of Kendama enthusiasts as its initiative to introduce the traditional Japanese game to its customers.
WoodWork Kendamas founder, Rahim Jamil, said “Kendama is one of the traditional games from Japan which is made of a Ken (sword) and Tama (ball) connected via a string.
“The Ken has three cups and a spike which fits into the hole in which the basic tricks consists of catching the ball in the cups and on the spike.”
He also mentioned that there are a variety of tricks which can be performed such as juggling the ball between the cups, balancing it in different points on the Ken, balancing the Ken on the ball and juggling the Kendama.
Hakim Salleh, who is also the founder of WoodWork Kendamas, said that the shop is one of the places that they visited to promote the game.
“There were already some 10 Kendama fans prior to the establishment of WoodWork Kendamas and throughout these visits, we have found around 20-30 fans of Kendama.”
During the visit at the skate shop, the Kendama fans could be seen performing tricks on their Kendamas to attract the visitors. For more information, follow ‘woodworkkendamas’ on Instagram.
